Review of Google News Archive Search

Posted on December 09, 2008 in Autodesk Architectural Studio

Google (GOOG) is taking on an interesting role this morning. Today it is launching "Google News Archive Search," which will allow researchers and anyone doing searches on old news to go back some 200 years if the articles are available. Google is also doing with several partners you might not guess would want to cooperate, and with their blessing. http://news.google.com/archivesearch/ Time Warner (TWX) has its Time Magazine in the search, as does the New York Times (NYT) and the Washington Post (WPO). Factiva, a venture of Reuters (RTRSY) & Dow Jones (DJ) are in the offering as well. You can even search and purchase old articles from the Wall Street Journal and The Gaurdian. LexisNexis, a news search unit of Reed Elsevier NV ADS (ENL) in Holland, is also said to be part of the search. The interesting model here is that the "free"portion of this will essentially be an introduction or the first part of the article and you will have the option to buy the rest of each article. So instead of devaluing online content, this could in theory at least increase the value as back-dated articles could continue to generate revenues. The publishers (for now) are getting to keep the fees charged per article, and Google will supposedly not get advertising or traffic from the deal. Google won't even have the typical sponsored links that it normally has, although that is on a "for now" status. The service is grouping related articles together from a given time period and the search results are supposedly based entirely on relevance, with no precedence given to fee-based content over free content. The mix of fee versus free links will also vary depending on your query. This will also generate a quasi-timeline that allows search results in a chronology of news articles. This also takes each search click directly to the content owner's site. This is seemingly like a quasi-free LexisNexis. It could even be decribed as a Topix.net similar product, but this is for some 200 years. I did go in and pull up a few quick searches to get an interface and to get a quick opinion of the functionality. I typed in "Jack the Ripper" and was not really pleased with the chronology, but you do get an instant alternative to a normal Google search. A search for "1929 Crash" was a bit all over the place. Even typing in "Google IPO" shows a jumbled article result page. Nonetheless, this service will help for research and Google will undoubtedly make this better as time goes on. Unfortunately, Google is seemingly not getting much more than goodwill from paid content creators at this point. Ultimately the company will have to participate in revenues or at least in advertising, so it may end up being a net-good for the company. Until then this is just another net-neutral equivalent for the stock. Jon C. Ogg September 6, 2006 cheap corel draw cheap microsoft office

Cisco Not Rallying on Analyst Day

Posted on December 08, 2008 in Autodesk Architectural Studio

Cisco Systems (CSCO) does not feel any more cautious since its last earnings release. There hasn't been enough time to see the world really change, but you would think the street would be at least somewhat happy to see this after coming back from holiday. The company today has reaffirmed its 10% to 15% annoual growth, and maintained its prior quarterly and fiscal guidance today at its analyst conference. It maintained its 15% to 20% fiscal growth this year in revenues due to the Scientific-Atlanta merger. As fas as ex-Scientific-Atlanta revenues, Cisco's revenue will rise between 10% and 15%. For Cisco's Q1 ending in October the company forecast growth of between 19% and 21% including Scientific-Atlanta, which translates to about 11% to 13% without those sales. The company also said it will actively return funds to shareholders. They will do this by remaining active in the buyback plan, and its CFO Powell said a dividend is more of a "WHEN" rather than an "if." As far as its market share, it plans to keep retaking what it lost. According to the webcast, the company has turned the corner in gaining market share in routing, and it will continuously boost share in the next several years. Oddly enough, the shares are not really responding. CSCO stock is trading down almost 1%, or down $0.20, at $21.90. While CSCO has been regaining and taking share, many smaller optical and equipment companies have been hamstrung. This morning Finisar (FNSR) gave up over 10% after lackluster earnings, and recent reports out of JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Ciena (CIEN) were less than well received. It looks like the company is not that worried that Juniper (JNPR) will get back off the floor and it has so far kept the little guys like Extreme (EXTR) and Foundry (FDRY) relegated to a "tolerable but unwanted step child" status. As long as it is able to keep H3C, the 3Com and Huawei router venture, at bay then the company is in one of teh best competitive positions it has been in for years. Doug ran an article this morning discussing CEO Chambers selling some of his shares, so perhaps that has kept a lid on some of the shareholder optimism so far. You can probably expect many analyst calls doing "updates"and "reiterations" in the next 24 hours as a result of this analyst meeting. In this environment, you would have thought that a "good news" would have been enough. It may be the "Sell the news" trade that is prevailing since the stock has recovered from just over$17.00 before earnings to a recent level of $22.00 before the analyst meeting. The recent chart has also been giving some overbought readings, so maybe it just needs a breather. Jon C. Ogg September 6, 2006

Home Depot And Dell: BusinessWeek States The Obvious

Posted on December 07, 2008 in Autodesk Inventor Series

Stocks: (F)(VIA)(HD)(DELL)(TWX) It is nice for BusinessWeek to come out with a list of "CEOs In The Hot Seat". I think that should be "on the hot seat", but that's fine. The premise of the article is that with Bill Ford stepping down and the CEO of Viacom being sacked, someone has to be next. The obvious problem with the analysis is that at Ford and Viacom board level decisions are controlled by a small number of people, no matter what their boards tell Wall St. Changing the guard only took one vote at Viacom. Sumber Redstone, enemy of Scientology. High on the list were Dell and Home Depot. Time Warner also made it. Our coverage of that company is written at BloggingStocks (www.bloggingstocks.com). In the case of Dell, the control of the company is probably still with Michael Dell, the founder and largest shareholder. Dell has given his man, Kevin Rollins, public support. Although Dell could throw Rollins out for a stock price $35.68 this year to $22.10, it would be blaming the chief executive for problems that are endemic to the PC industry. The company's growth has slowed down, but its is still a $60 billion company with huge operating income. Over at Home Depot, the board may have the same problem with Robert Nardelli. He has angered shareholders who think his pay package is too high and that he is an arrogant toad. But, as BusinessWeek points out, the financial performance of the company has been excellent since he joined. The recent problems with revenue, due primarily to slow housing starts and energy prices cannot be laid solely at his feet. The company is facing an options probe and its stock has dropped from $43.95 to $34.17. It is, however, up 80% over the last three-and-a-half years. The odds makers in Vegas are probably betting the the CEOs at Dell and Home Depot will stay around awhile. BusinessWeek should check the over/under. Douglas A. Post-exam Languor...

Posted on December 06, 2008 in Canvas Standard

Wow. I had so many plans after STPM and only nearly half of them have panned out... Still no Langkawi in sight - Jason is a lazy pig - although I did get my internship at KLPac... Wahoo! Pat on the back for Shang. Actually, not really. It's a very tiring, paying-peanuts job. Which is why I need to teach MUET for RM 45 per hour to make up for it :) I'm ASM-ing (Assistant Stage Manager) for one of three plays going to be held in KLPac and Ipoh and Penang in March this year. I'm under Teng Ky-Gan who wrote Tunku! and Broken Bridges. I know, wow. He's only 25. I'm working with Fish, and Aishah Sinclair. That woman is gorgeous onstage and off. Probably even more,off-stage. And she's also a darling. Actually pretty much everyone is extremely extremely warm. Especially Joe, who has a real soft spot for me and called me his pussycat. (He probably knows that I would do everything; including sit, stay, roll over, play dead, for him. Meow.) OK, so onto the Platform. I actually performed! I changed "Painted Faces" and made it a bit funnier and more cohesive, I think, but the essence was the same. There were good performances, particularly Mark Beau de Silva's "Queens", performed by him, Johann Lim, and Kelvin Wong. Mark and Johann are the other directors for the 3-play performance. So I was feeling pretty good about myself, especially after Gavin and Joe hugged me -twice! - and told me I'd done a good job and all that, and after some time just sitting there even Indi Nadarajah gave me a thumbs up. Dude, like wow. Lo and behold, a Kakiseni reporter who reviewed the night. And what a raving review he gave... He basically tore us to bits; "...every piece the night had to offer was cringe-worthy..." Quote unquote. Mine was a "whingeing" piece loaded with "histronics", "part rant, part melodramatic posturing", and so on. He was no less kind to the other performers, saying that if you "fling enough muck at a wall, something is bound to stick." Wow. Even the unshakeable part of my confidence was shaken. How discouraging was that??!! I see where Johann has commented on the article page that Kakiseni has not "a foot in the arts community" but a foot ON the arts scene. Fortunately there were good reviews as well. TV3 did some good coverage on us, but on "Malaysia Hari Ini" at 7.15 in the morning! Malaysiakini's entertainment forum, "Rentakini", gave us really nice reviews!! Apparently I was "witty" and my performance was "stunning"! Go figure... In other news, I've just started a Facebook profile! Thanks to all the pestering from EVERYONE to upgrade... See you there! cheap microsoft office cheap corel draw

Voice actors sound off

Posted on November 30, 2008 in Borland Delphi

Piglet Remembering John Fiedler (1925-2005) Jim Hill remembers that great big talent who provided Piglet's very small voice: Character actor John Fiedler, who passed away this past Saturday at the age of 80. by Jim Hill You know, it's kind of bizarre that John Fiedler -- the original voice of Piglet -- actually died within 24 hours of Paul Winchell's passing. "Why bizarre?," you ask. Well, you see, there's this story that I had originally wanted to tell as part of yesterday's Winchell tribute. About the very last time Paul was hired to provide Tigger's voice for a Disney animated feature. A project that was then entitled "Winnie the Pooh and the Family Tree." Winchell's first (and only) recording session for this movie came in the Spring of 1998. And -- as the guys in the booth listened to the obvious rasp in Paul's voice -- it quickly became apparent that the 76-year-old performer no longer sounded like Tigger. I mean, sure, Winchell had originated this character's voice back in that 1968 Disney featurette, "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day." But now -- over 30 years later -- this voiceover veteran could no longer produce Tigger's distinctive bouncy, trouncy sound. So -- after that single session -- Paul was let go from the project. And Disney eventually brought in vocal pro Jim Cummings, who was already doing Pooh's voice for "Family Tree." And -- given that Jim had already been doing Tigger's voice (On various Disney television shows and/or for Disney Consumer Products. Where it had proven to be very cost effective to hire a Paul Winchell sound-alike, rather than pay full price for the really-for-real Paul Winchell ... Anyway ... ) -- it only made sense to replace Winchell with Cummings. Of course, what Disney hadn't counted on was all the bad publicity that would erupt as a direct result of Paul's dismissal. The trades were immediately full of headlines like "Disney Bounces Tigger" and "Winchell gets thrown out of 'Family Tree'." (Which may explain the studio ultimately decided to change this film's title. Dropping "Winnie the Pooh and the Family Tree" in favor of "The Tigger Movie.") Anywho ... The press keeps looking for ways to keep this controversy going. Which is why reporters eventually approached John Fiedler, the last remaining member of the original vocal cast that Walt Disney Productions had assembled 'way back in the 1960s to do those first three "Winnie the Pooh" featurettes. John was the only member of that ensemble who was still under contract to the studio. So -- hoping for a good quote -- a columnist asked Fiedler point-blankly what he thought about Disney replacing Winchell with Cummings. John replied: "I'm just glad that Jim can't do Piglet's voice." That's a cute little story, don't you think? Which was why I was originally thinking about weaving it into yesterday's article. But eventually I decided against including that particular anecdote. Why For? Well ... Because that joke actually comes at Paul's expense. It's a laugh that only occurs because of this extremely trying time in Winchell's life. That period when this entertainment vet just felt that he had become too old to perform anymore. So I guess you can understand why I originally decided to spike that story. Even though it obviously showcased Fiedler's quick wit, this veteran character's ability to continue to surprise people with his awesome comic timing. Well, who knew that -- just hours after I'd decided to cut that anecdote out of my Winchell tribute -- that I'd now have a logical reason to bring up that particular John Fiedler story. Speaking of Mr. Winchell ... I guess I should mention there's actually sort of a happy ending to that Paul-gets-fired story. You see, just around this same time, the Imagineers were beginning work on WDW's new dark ride, "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh." And -- after they saw all those stories in the paper about Disney dismissing Winchell from the "Family Tree" project -- the guys at WDI obviously thought that this was a pretty lousy way to treat a television legend. So when the Imagineers began recording the soundtrack for this new Fantasyland attraction, they insisted that Paul come in and perform Tigger's vocals. The guys from WDI ... They really didn't care that Winchell sounded a little raspy. What mattered to them was that the man who had originated this character's voice was now providing Tigger's vocals for their "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" ride. The message that the Imagineers were obviously trying to get across to Paul was: We're not all like those guys over at Disney Feature Animation. We actually value who you are and what you've done for our company. More importantly, we appreciate all the entertainment that you've provided us with over the past 50 years. And -- given that the Imagineers also made a point of hiring John Fiedler to record Piglet's dialogue for this new Disney World attraction -- I guess it's pretty obvious that the guys at WDI thought fairly highly of John too. Unfortunately, the "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" ride was pretty much Winchell's last hurrah with the Walt Disney Company. Whereas Fiedler ... He actually went on to do a number of new projects for the Mouse House after that. Providing Piglet's vocals for "The Book of Pooh" TV series, the "Mickey's House of Villains"&"Winnie the Pooh: Springtime for Roo" video premieres as well as the "Piglet's Big Movie"&"Pooh's Heffaump Movie" theatrical releases. In fact, there's still one more project in the pipeline -- "Pooh's Heffalump Halloween -- The Movie" -- that John also did voicework for. Though that video premiere isn't due to hit store shelves 'til September 13th of this year. Anyhow ... I just wish that Winchell could have experienced what Fiedler did over the last few years of his life. That sense that -- even though John was a man in his late 70s -- he was still someone who could add something unique to the mix. Which is why Disney deliberately sought Fiedler out whenever they were getting a new "Winnie the Pooh" project off the ground. But now that John's gone ... Well, given the billions that the Mouse makes off of the sale of Pooh-related products each year, it's pretty obvious that this franchise is going to have to continue. Which is why the guys over Disney's voice department are probably already wondering who they're going to get to fill Fiedler's shoes. Maybe they'll get lucky and find another huge talent like Jim Cummings. Someone who -- thanks to their own comic genius as well as the gift of mimicry --will be able to create a close approximation of Paul Winchell's Tigger. Still, given that Tigger's voice was obviously patterned after the voice that Winchell used to do for his Knucklehead Smiff character, it was fairly easy for Disney to come up a replacement bouncy, trouncy tiger. Whereas Fielder's distinctive take on Piglet -- that halting delivery, the sense that this character was constantly struggling to keep his fears under control, the obvious heart that John poured into this part -- it might take Disney's voice department quite a while to come up with an actor who can accomplish what Fiedler did. Which was make us care about -- even fall in love with -- a small, fretful pig. The entire JHM staff wishes to extend its heartfelt condolensces to the friends & family of John Fiedler during their time of sorrow. cheap corel draw cheap microsoft office
