The print-life claims promoted with various combinations of ink and media should not be confused with guarantees of longevity, says a paper recently posted in the Knowledge Base on Breathing Color’s website. The paper points out that although Print Permanence Ratings test for factors such as exposure to light, exposure to other common environmental factors are left out. For example, print permanence could conceivably be affected by exposure to certain chemicals in carpets, stretcher bars, the Kraft paper used with framed prints, and the boxes your inkjet media comes in. And that may have been the case when some printmakers discovered that even prints on papers with high print permanence ratings began deteriorating within months (and in some cases, days) of being printed. “Should a product not live up to its rating, users need to understand they will receive absolutely no recourse—in some cases, not even a refund for the price of the roll or box of sheets purchased,” notes the paper. “Ratings are no guarantee of longevity. From 24/7 Wall St. We set out to pick the ten best managed companies in America for the year that began June 2005 and ended June 2007. At this point virtually all companies have reported their June financials and filed their 10-Qs. We looked only at companies with market capitalizations of over $1 billion. Most of the companies on the list are much larger. We looked at several financial measurements: return on invested, return on asset, return on equity, gross margins, sales growth over one, three and five years and operating income growth over the same period. To be fair, we made the comparisons within industries so we would not be comparing airlines with banks. The other important aspect to our evaluation, and the most difficult, is picking companies where management mattered. In an industry where all companies are doing very well, good management may not be the single most important key to financial and stock market performance. In difficult industries strong management may save a company. We looked for a combination of excellent long-term strategic decisions and tactical expertise in areas like marketing, operations, or manufacturing. The companies are not presented in any particularly order. The first company on the list is not considered better managed than the company presented in the sixth or seventh place. We will cover two companies each day for the week so that by Friday the full list of ten will have been posted. 1. Altria. Altria (MO) is a unique combination of smart long-term decisions, marketing excellence, and global manufacturing skills. As with all companies that do well, a little luck may have played a role. It is sometimes hard to remember when investors were so concerned about the lawsuits against big tobacco that Philip Morris stock dropped to $18 in early 2000. Of course, it now trades at about $83. Philip Morris bought Kraft in 1988. It was an intelligent hedge against its tobacco risks. The price tag was $15 billion. Then Philip Morris bought Nabisco for $14.9 billion in 2000. Kraft is now worth $56 billion and the renamed Philip Morris, Altria, holds 85% of the shares. Philip Morris fought and won the majority of the litigation against its cigarette sales. The liabilities could have run well into the billions of dollars, but legal expertise plus a bit of luck allowed the company to avoid the huge majority of its financial exposure. And, its purchase of Kraft, in many ways a hedge, turned out to be a great financial success. Altria has been able to hold on to 50% of the tobacco market in the US, and substantial portions of the market in Europe, South America, and Japan. The Marlboro brand is one of the most valuable in the world. According to Morningstar it outsells the next ten domestic brands and next seven international brands combined. Philip Morris has done this in a market where it charges a premium for its tobacco brands and still handily beats discounted competitors. The margins on tobacco have stayed extraordinarily high. According to the Altria 10-Q, domestic tobacco operations made operating income of $1.301 billion on revenue of $4.785 billion in the quarter ending June 30. Since some of these asset managers cracked and some soared after the tech-bubble broke from 2000 to 2003 many names in the sector like Nuveen Investments (JNC), Janus (JNS), Alliance (AC), Gabelli (GBL), and T.Rowe Price (TROW) have all been noted in the past as potential jewels that larger companies would want to own if the was right. Keep in mind that many of these firms have their own issues and some have critical shareholders that may not go along with being on the receiving end of a merger. There are likely many other names that could or would be thought of as potential acquisition targets, but these are just the ones I had some data on in recent months or longer-term. Many of these names in the sector opened up 1% today on this, but most of these slid lower as the day progressed and the DJIA closed down over 2% on lackluster earnings and over continued Iran concerns. To compare the data below on these other names, Blackrock has the following comparable data: $8.1B market cap; P/E of 40.1; price to sales of 7.55. Here is some data I have on these other names that is both current and from some past notes I have kept on these asset managers: Janus (JNS) has a high P/E of 49-51 depending on who calculated it and trades at 4.9 times sales; and has been plagued with asset outflows and client losses in recent years, but has been thought of as a takeover name since the stock was $14-15; so stock already up close to 50% since it first started being thought of that way; new management would be thought of as potentially being able to manage earnings better and potentially to recoup some lost clients. Market cap is $4.7B and stock is still down over 50% from Jan 2001 levels from its huge tech exposure during the meltdown. Gabelli (GBL) has been thought of as a rangebound stock and some of the minority shareholders may be willing to accept offer that can make them money since the stock really hasn't done much over last 4 years and the company is often thought of as a laggard fund manager run by street pundit Mario Gabelli. P/E is 21.8; price to sales is 5.2; with a market cap of only $1.4B. Alliance Capital (AC) hasn't been thrown around as a takeover name lately but it used to come up quite a bit. Market cap is $5B; P/E is 22 and price to sales is (large, need to double-check). This stock is up 100% from the lows over the last two years, but it is barely bacl to flat if you compare the stock to where it was 5 years ago. T.Rowe Price (TROW) has been constantly thought of as a valuable asset manager because of its larger-percentage international asset management arm compared to many US fund managers, but its market cap is also about $10B. Its P/E is 25.6 and price to sales is 6.8. The stock has also performed well as it is up about 90% over the last 5-years so it may be thought of as not as vulnerable or in need of a merger partner. Nuveen Investments (JNC) has long been considered a prize asset because of its set amount of closed-end funds giving it a large degree of predictable cashflows and earnings, but they are/were majority owned by St. Paul Travelers (current status unknown as I stopped following it on price) and T.Rowe Price and Fidelity both own large chunks of it. Its market cap is $3.5B and its value has more than doubled in the last 5-years so some might not think it is a problem asset that could be turned around. P/E is 24.10 and price to sales is 6.2.
