From 24/7 Wall St. We set out to pick the ten best managed companies in America for the year that began June 2005 and ended June 2007. At this point virtually all companies have reported their June financials and filed their 10-Qs. We looked only at companies with market capitalizations of over $1 billion. Most of the companies on the list are much larger. We looked at several financial measurements: return on invested, return on asset, return on equity, gross margins, sales growth over one, three and five years and operating income growth over the same period. To be fair, we made the comparisons within industries so we would not be comparing airlines with banks. The other important aspect to our evaluation, and the most difficult, is picking companies where management mattered. In an industry where all companies are doing very well, good management may not be the single most important key to financial and stock market performance. In difficult industries strong management may save a company. We looked for a combination of excellent long-term strategic decisions and tactical expertise in areas like marketing, operations, or manufacturing. The companies are not presented in any particularly order. The first company on the list is not considered better managed than the company presented in the sixth or seventh place. We will cover two companies each day for the week so that by Friday the full list of ten will have been posted. 1. Altria. Altria (MO) is a unique combination of smart long-term decisions, marketing excellence, and global manufacturing skills. As with all companies that do well, a little luck may have played a role. It is sometimes hard to remember when investors were so concerned about the lawsuits against big tobacco that Philip Morris stock dropped to $18 in early 2000. Of course, it now trades at about $83. Philip Morris bought Kraft in 1988. It was an intelligent hedge against its tobacco risks. The price tag was $15 billion. Then Philip Morris bought Nabisco for $14.9 billion in 2000. Kraft is now worth $56 billion and the renamed Philip Morris, Altria, holds 85% of the shares. Philip Morris fought and won the majority of the litigation against its cigarette sales. The liabilities could have run well into the billions of dollars, but legal expertise plus a bit of luck allowed the company to avoid the huge majority of its financial exposure. And, its purchase of Kraft, in many ways a hedge, turned out to be a great financial success. Altria has been able to hold on to 50% of the tobacco market in the US, and substantial portions of the market in Europe, South America, and Japan. The Marlboro brand is one of the most valuable in the world. According to Morningstar it outsells the next ten domestic brands and next seven international brands combined. Philip Morris has done this in a market where it charges a premium for its tobacco brands and still handily beats discounted competitors. The margins on tobacco have stayed extraordinarily high. According to the Altria 10-Q, domestic tobacco operations made operating income of $1.301 billion on revenue of $4.785 billion in the quarter ending June 30. International tobacco operations had income of $2.139 billion on revenue of $12.310 billion for the same period. A great portion of the company cheap microsoft office cheap corel draw

Towards a Workable Concept?

In response to my previous post, "Dialectical Montage and Disneyland", I was lucky enough to receive this reply by a Mr. Chris Stangl, who does an excellent job pointing out a lot of the problems with my assumptions about physical space and cinema space in the essay, as well as bringing up a number of excellent points about film theory and applicability. Since there's little point in me recounting such an articulate and intelligent argument, I have presented his reply below for your consideration, followed by my own thoughts. -- "I think this essay is a solid start toward understanding how park and attraction design incorporates elements of the other arts. However, any thesis that rests on "the only useful, acceptable way to analyze and discuss" a subject is going to be problematic, and practically begs for complication! 1: Montage Theory It's a pretty grand Unified Field Theory of Imagineering, for one thing, and using Eisensteinian montage as even a starting point is going to lead to trouble. It is a specific editing theory, which hasn't been borne out in pure form outside of, say, the films of Sergei Eisenstein. "Dialectical" does not just mean the editing theory explains "nothing more nor less than how movies carry meaning through their editing patterns" as in language. It means the theory is modeled after philosophical dialectics, and it is founded in the contradiction synthesis and material/brain-world interaction of Marxist dialectics The theory in practice involves shots as discreet units in conflict, generating an effect not present in isolated consideration of the shots; it is "shot-based", in a literal, diagrammatic way. so the first question must be: is there even a way in which a park may have discreet shots, which are replaced by another? Dialectical montage is an indigenous film theory, extremely and expressly medium-specific. The elements you are identifying as the attraction equivalent of "shots" could possibly be linked to notions of cinematic mise en sc cheap corel draw cheap microsoft office

This week's peregrinations, purchases and progress

Me dancing solo at the Indie Stage at SecondFest This week I spent some time doing all the things that everyone else is doing. This involved: Going to Secondfest . This kind of thing is outside my RL experiences but I liked the kind of music there which seemed entirely appropriate to the dance moves provided and the general out of body experience of SL. Nice to be able to put an avatar to some of the names I've read about elsewhere. Somehow I wasn't expecting thousands of people and I wasn't disappointed but there were enough to introduce some trippy lag. Loved the light show at the main stage but failed signally to get any photos apart from this one from the Indie stage. Gawping at the Sistine Chapel recreated on Vassar Island . I've never been there in RL but was pleasantly surprised by the rendering in SL given the way that others have lauded Microsoft's Photosynth. It clearly is a jewel and I'm sure it will attract a lot of visitors to Vassar Island who would never get a chance to experience the real thing. The development raised all sorts of issues on the SLED list (IP, appropriate use) which reminds me that I'd really like an RSS feed for the SLED list as there were other good points about sustainable funding, group development and leadership. Nice to see that Vassar had a nice mix of outdoor spaces as well as a surprisingly sombre castle for functions. I also went to a few smaller places such as Shimmer Island (which appears to be a beach house used by Bromley College [which has a presence in SL based largely around LSL]). Nice to see what you can do with a small space. The ANGEL Learning Group had an outing to Terra Incognita (active learning in SL) and Starry Night (van Gogh), both places I'll try to get to given that I couldn't make their visit. I went mad and bought a few gadgets to further burden my freebie-deluged inventory. I should really document these. Everyone seems to be raving about Mystitool and I have found it useful if not entirely indispensable (yet). I do seem to be encountering a lot of rezzes of the "table with spare chair", even on the largely custom Genome Island. I also bought a building tool, Skidz Primz , that gives the builder a (limited) range of intelligent prims that can interact "intelligently" with other prims outside of build mode. I'm sure I'm under-utilising this so I need to revisit the video on esnips. Played with sloog.org as a landmarking site (as blogged previously). Found a possible complement/alternative in deliHUD (via Vint Falken's excellent SL bookmarks on deli). Noted with restricted enthusiasm the availability of the FindAmass ring-based interface to Wikipedia, Google Def, etc. Best places found thus far for freebie tools are: School Store ICT Library on Info Island (use the map at the orientation point to teleport) Still looking for a message board. There's a lot of choice: one on SLExchange, one by PixelTrix (lots of good office stuff there, including calendars), and one at Caletta. Having given my RSS/SL talk on Tuesday I had a chance to get on with my own building which has extended to rezzing inventory, basic particle system applications and dialog use. This is largely on the back of modding scripts in the LSL wiki Examples and Script Library. I haven't been to any of the SL tutorials yet -- I guess I'm trying to see how far I can get before I get stuck. I'm certainly having problems with the physics and coordinate systems. I'm beginning to appreciate the importance of having a fairly detailed plan at the outset as inter-dependencies can emerge that can be annoying to retrofit. cheap microsoft office cheap corel draw

MySpace Hottie of the day - Bobbi Billard

Posted on October 12, 2008 in Discreet 3D Studio

Today, let's meet Bobbi Billard, a sexy voluptuous blonde from Austin, Texas. She's a glamour, fitness and bikini model who has been modeling since the age of 12, when her parents enrolled her in modeling school. At age 19, she got her first paying modeling job, a poster for Jones Performance Fuel Systems. After attending a Super Chevy show to sign the posters and being a "star" for a day, Bobbi was hooked! The photographer for the poster recommended her to the McMullen Argus Publishing Company, which led to the cover of Minitruckin' Magazine. After that came the 1999 Hot Bike & Street Rodder Calendar. Soon after Bobbi scored an ad for Dragonfly sportswear which ran for two months in Surfin' magazine and appeared in the September 1999 issue of Playboy. Since then, as well as her modeling gigs, she has appeared in several print ads, TV commercials, and bit parts on television shows and movies. She also had a brief stint as a professional wrestler until injuries forced her to quit. She also spends a lot of her time maintaining her website and chatting with her fans. She states that she likes intelligent men but hates arrogant men and guys who dress like pimps. If you would like to know more about this sexy blonde, check out her profile at http://www.myspace.com/bobbibillard.

The Truth Of This Art

Posted on October 12, 2008 in CorelDRAW Graphics

The reality is there are really TWO levels to this whole thing called "being successful with women". There is the base level understanding that is important, that includes basic important stuff like not supplicating, knowing how to have an interesting conversation, having a basic sense of humor, learning to be comfortable with a woman, etc. Thing is, I can teach all that stuff to a guy in one hour. It's really not that hard, that stuff. And just with that stuff alone, a guy will be able to get some basic level success. That doesn't mean that even with that stuff, it doesn't take practice. It's a PROCESS, a skill, that you get better and better with throughout your life with practice. But the thing is, to me, it's the more advanced stuff, that is actually FASCINATING. I ENJOY taking this stuff as FAR AS IT CAN GO. To me, attraction and emotion are INCREDIBLY super fascinating things, to experience and to allow others to experience, especially in a positive way that is healthy. I'm talking about interactions that go way beyond just being "DECENTLY" effective. And I'm talking about creating this massive impact DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY, not just for the "pick up", because your attraction power is only as strong as she is feeling it at any given MOMENT. This is not to say to get all bent out of shape or nervous about it, it's just to say that if you want to be successful with a woman or women long term, you have to know how to keep the attraction going day after day. And the GREATEST thing is that all this can be done in a way that is a BYPRODUCT of WHO YOU ARE, instead of you having to get all weird, nervous and desperate and trying to "entertain" a woman constantly. It's not about that at all. The first thing to understand for success is that you must have TOTAL CONVICTION IN WHAT YOU SAY AND DO. The LACK of this total conviction is one of the biggest problems that guys aren't even aware of when they try to do a pick up. You see, when you interact with a woman, tons of subtle things become apparent about your emotional state, which will subconsciously be interpreted by her and to a significant extent she will instinctively FEEL a certain way about you based on these things. When you open up a conversation with a woman, EVERY WORD YOU SAY, EVERY THING YOU DO, MUST BE SAID AND DONE WITH TOTAL CONVICTION. So many guys, as they attempt to run their pick-up, they think that what they are doing and saying is "stupid", or that the whole thing is silly, and this SHOWS in their body language and tonality. They have LACK OF CONVICTION in what they are doing.. The guy is afraid of doing his pickup properly, because he thinks the whole thing is "stupid", so what he does he ACTUALLY INTENTIONALLY ACTS LIKE A DORK, as if to say to the woman, "This is stupid, and I know it, so you can't make fun of me for doing it since I'm OBVIOUSLY AWARE THAT IT IS STUPID." Basically, it's an insecure mentality, that assumes the worst about yourself. It makes a guy look like he believes he couldn't possibly pull off a proper pick up, as if he is just not worthy enough, not cool enough, not interesting enough, not desirable enough, etc. And the irony is, THAT is the message the guy is giving her with total conviction, so she then FEELS that he is a dork, unworthy, etc. And the thing to remember, is that this conviction stuff applies to EVERYTHING, not just to your body language or what you say. It applies, for example, to your clothing, your style, the way you present yourself, the way you react and act, the way you THINK. It all starts in the MIND. Style, clothing, and accessories are simply AN EXTENSION OF YOUR PSYCHOLOGY AND YOUR STATE OF MIND. And one affects the other. So if you wear clothing that says "ho-hum and please don't look at me" or if you wear clothing that says "OH MY GOSH I NEEED YOU to look at me" in both cases that's a reflection of yourself. And not the most attractive reflection. And you will start to feel the same way about yourself as the message you are giving off through what you wear, which reinforces the habit of wearing that stuff, which reinforces the habit of FEELING that way, in a never ending cycle. But it works for the positive as well. If you DO feel, for example, that you are intriguing, if you are fascinated by the intriguing and the mysterious, you might very well choose styles that YOU find intriguing. And don't forget, you don't have to be put into one "slot", you can have a myriad of awesome and interesting states of mind and the styles to match those with total congruency. You see, this is why you don't have to be FAKE. Attractive forces have INFINITE expressions, just like art has infinite expressions, although there are certain principles, certain patterns that are always present in any powerful attractive force or element. But if you don't FEEL that you HAVE any of the attractive forces or emotions in you right now, then you are going to have to REAQUIRE them. They ARE in you, and if you don't feel you have them, it's just because they have been buried under the weight of tons of negative forces. Whether it was because you watched too much feminist bullshit television programs, such as Sex and The City, where the reality is that they needed to call an actual heterosexual male writer to help out because one of the main writers of the show was gay! So that already tells you that the show was not only not even accurate to how women feel about men, but also that it may very well have been some guy who HATES heterosexual men who was writing the show. I could go on and on about this, but let me just state that half the reason guys lose their "mojo" is all the bullshit they read or watch that robs them of their self-esteem, some of the info unfortunately comes from magazines and shows aimed at supposedly helping men! The idea is to get men feeling insecure so they feel they need to watch the show or read the magazine to make sure they are doing the right thing, and usually the ridiculous advice is things like get a tan, know the best restaurants to take a woman to, etc. Bullshit like that, stuff that totally ignores the REAL issue of the kind of aura that YOU yourself have. Also, even if you DO read a statistic about why you shouldn't be or can't be successful with women, you have to ask yourself a question: Are you going to BE a statistic???? The reason I say this is because for every guy that finds the reason why he can't succeed, I'll find a guy with the same situation who DOES succeed because he MAKES UP FOR IT in other ways. The bottom line is that for a guy there's no excuse, because there are many ways for a guy to be attractive to a woman, and any "weakness" he may have can be made up for by excelling in the many other areas of his game. Also, sometimes, as guys, we had horrific childhoods that robbed us of our "inner game". It can be an ongoing process to SALVAGE all that good stuff from underneath years of layers of negative programming, and it can be a process to also get re-educated to learn the truth about women and attraction after being exposed to so much FALSE information about this topic. But that good stuff that's in you CAN be rescued, it IS STILL there, it just needs to be FREED. You have to realize that the past does not EXIST. It's only in our imaginations and mind now, and it's up to you to LEARN from it and take action in the PRESENT. You don't have to live the PAST anymore. Now, it's up to YOU. Another important step is asking yourself what do YOU enjoy? And don't just tell me food, sex, spending money, or things like that. Those things are very raw things that everyone obviously has in common. I'm talking about the more refined stuff, the kind of stuff that you would be interested in if you ALREADY had all the sex stuff, etc, taken care of. So you see, you don't HAVE to be funny. You don't HAVE to be intriguing. You don't HAVE to be "dangerous". You don't HAVE to be "adventurous". You don't HAVE to be mysterious. You don't HAVE to be "playful". And you certainly don't have to be ALL those things. But you damn well HAVE to be SOMETHING EMOTIONALLY COMPELLING. I refuse to believe that there is ANYONE out there who is really totally boring or who has no potential of being emotionally compelling. It's impossible to really have nothing interesting about yourself, because life itself demands some pretty big things of anyone in order to survive and manage physically and/or emotionally. And then, when you figure out what you are, you must UNLEASH that with CONVICTION. Conviction goes hand in hand with Congruency. If you don't have conviction in what you are saying, doing, or wearing, you won't be congruent to it at all and it will fall to pieces, although sometimes you just have to fake it to make it, so that you ultimately DO become congruent to it. It takes a little determination. Another really important point that needs to be stated, but is almost never said: When starting an interaction with a woman you have never met before, it's important to realize that you don't have to come out EXPLODING out the gates with something INSANELY powerful to say right off the bat. That's simply impossible most of the time, and in fact, defeats the whole point of BUILDING an interaction and AMPLIFYING an emotional experience. Think of a good movie- does the first SECOND blow you away? Usually not, usually though it's INTERESTING, it arouses at least some curiosity, or it is intriguing, it gets you interested to FIND OUT MORE about the character. And things KEEP ON GETTING MORE AND MORE EXCITING, INTERESTING, DRAMATIC, etc. as each minute unfolds. In fact, if a movie came out at you in the first SECOND with too much intensity, it would often weird you out. You haven't even had a chance to find out WHAT IS GOING ON HERE, to get comfortable enough to even WANT to be overwhelmed with any emotion. Actually, there is one more thing I want to mention: A lot of what makes an interaction GREAT is dealing with emotions that a woman can RELATE to. You see, there is nothing wrong about Star Wars per se, but not too many girls "get it" (although I have met now and then the very rare girl who totally "gets it" and who is both intelligent and hot) but usually unless you are really talented at conveying the essence of something, starting a conversation with a girl about Star Wars is like a girl starting a conversation with you about panty liners. You get what I'm saying? Not easily able to relate to it. And also, talking to a girl about celebrity gossip, etc, although a GREAT idea for beginners, is really just a starting point for your conversation. You want to take the conversation to a place that ultimately is something that not only is interesting to her, but also interesting to YOU, and thus BONDS both of you. In fact, you want to take the conversation to a point that leaves her INSPIRED, UPLIFTED, OR BETTER OFF in some way, even if it was you TEACHING her something that will help HER emotionally. And you do ALL OF THIS from a totally NON NEEDY standpoint, it all flows from a perspective of ABUNDANCE, i.e. that you are in such a great place of abundance, that you don't need to "get back" from her in order to GIVE. You honestly don't NEED her to give back to you, because you know you can have other women. You actually ENJOY the interaction for the moment you are both in, there is no "destination" that you are obsessed with. THAT is attractive. Welcome to the non-creepy world of real attraction and connection that does not rely on scripts, alcohol, or whores for results. If you would like to learn MORE about all this, I have GREAT news for you: I will be offering a full two-day LIVE Seminar, August 19th to 20th, in TORONTO, where you can get the complete picture, the most ACCURATE picture about attraction and how to actually do pick up properly. Web 3.0: Artificial What?

Posted on September 27, 2008 in Adobe Pagemaker

On the heals of our last posting about Web 2.0, the San Jose Mercury News published a New York Times article by John Markoff Sunday entitled “Web of the future would think for you.” Basically the article talks about the move to “add a layer of meaning on top of the existing Web that would make it less of a catalog and more of a guide – and even provide the foundation for systems that can reason in a human fashion. That level of artificial intelligence, with machines doing the thinking instead of simply following commands, has eluded researchers for more than half a century.” Artificial intelligence on the World Wide Web? Methinks this is still the stuff of science fiction, no matter how cool the Internet’s become. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." Regardless, technology folk and companies like IBM and Google are calling this evolution Web 3.0 and are working on more practical uses like producing vacation recommendations or predicting the next hit song. So, if Web 2.0 refers to a supposed second generation of Internet-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users, what will Web 3.0 bring? According to Markoff “in the future, more powerful systems could act as personal advisers in areas as diverse as financial planning, with an intelligent system mapping out a retirement plan for a couple, for instance, or educational consulting, with the Web helping a high school student identify the right college.” I’m not so sure about that. And what about the Web helping a company identifying the right candidate for any said position? I mean, we already have a endless list of online recruitment sourcing services, social networking sites, assessments tools and the like, that all claim to find the right candidate for the right job quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. These services help to reduce the inordinate amount of applicants received, yes, but they don’t make the final “intelligent” hiring decisions employers need to make. People do that. Which reminded me of something. I took a ride in the Wayback Machine to one of my previous incarnations from six years ago where we touted finding interested, qualified applicants using proprietary sourcing technology and artificial intelligence (IQA’s with AI). And while that old “AI” partner is still around, Burning Glass Technologies, and doing well in the recruitment space, our business model failed. Were we ahead of our time? Somewhat, yes. But my point is that while the Internet will continue to be a powerful repository of highly sortable information, the place to be to get in front of HR buyers, and the primarily delivery mechanism for many HR suppliers and their products and services – business models embracing artificially intelligent decision-making in the “human resource” marketplace will not be viable in the long term. "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." I know, Dave. I know.

Discovery Institute, religious right, renounce "Lying for Jesus"

Posted on September 25, 2008 in Adobe Encore DVD

In a surprise announcement today, the Discovery Institute announced that it is giving up its lies, distortions, rhetorical tricks, repeated claims of debunked pseudofacts, and accepting that the overwhelming body of scientific truth is on the side of a testable, flexible, and natural explanation of evolution. Religious televangelists echoed the sentiment. "We've fought against this for so long, even our lies are threadbare. There's no fighting the facts. Even if it costs us a few million in donations, we're giving up. Public health, modern medicine, industry and engineering are all based on a natural explanation of how things work. We don't pray for God to fix our TVs--we call a repair service just like everyone else. It's time we accepted that the natural world can have a complex natural explanation. We're donating our time and wealth to the poor and concentrating on saving souls, not demonizing our opponents."
